His Daughter… Aretha!

April 4, 2022

The Howard School Theatre

Aretha was here! You won’t want to miss this incredible performance of Aretha’s biggest hits and some of her fan’s album favorites, great show(wo)manship, and an amazing time grooving down memory lane as Aretha returns to Howard.

For years it was rumored that The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, performed at Howard High School in the 1950’s or 60’s and we now have the evidence to prove it— an event poster! To commemorate that historic visit, the Howard Theatre Arts Program in partnership with Legends of Soul Chattanooga & Chattanooga Neighbors Arts Partnership present: “His Daughter … Aretha!”

Starring Jasmine Le’Shesa, Mary Lisa Wigfall & Cynthia Honeysucker. Background vocals supplied by Cortney Warner, Nikki Harkness & Jessica Parker. With Music Director C. Bryant Foster.

This old promotional poster advertised Rev. C.L. Franklin and his daughter Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers, and Miss Sammie Bryant performing at “Howard Hi” on Monday, April 4. We’re proud that Howard High’s history is entwined with excellence in the performing arts and the fight for justice. Just 6 weeks before Ms. Franklin’s apparent performance, the Howard High students had taken part in the sit-ins at the local dime stores to encourage the integration of such facilities. Join us again this April 4th as we celebrate Aretha’s legacy.
